Overview

The importance and popularity of online learning have increased a lot as the world is moving into an information era. The current COVID-19 situation shows that online learning acts both as a promising medium for equitable quality education, and an essential component for the education system when campuses shut down.

Junyi Academy Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Taiwan that aims to provide all children equitable quality education by technology, is eager to support our learning community during this pandemic. We release a dataset consisting of over 16 million exercise attempt logs on our platform from more than 72,000 students over the course of a year (from 2018/08 to 2019/07). We hope our dataset could empower the research of creating a better and personalized learning experience for students, and further encourage broader participation for contributing to the future of online learning from interdisciplinary experts.

Data Description

We provide three tables in the dataset.

Log_Problem.csv recorded 16,217,311 problem attempts of 72,630 selected students for a year from 2018/08 to 2019/07.

Info_Content.csv describes the metadata of the exercises, each exercise is a basic unit of learning consisted of many problems.

Info_UserData.csv describes the metadata of the selected registered students in Junyi Academy.

If you have any questions about the dataset, please use the Kaggle discussion to improve the information shareability and involvement of the community.

Inspiration for Directions

  • For each student, predict the accuracy of each exercise, which represents the ability of the student on a certain concept.

    • This prediction might be done before the student even started the exercise, by using exercise prerequisites or related exercises.
    • This can also be extended to predict whether a student will upgrade or downgrade on a certain exercise in the future.
    • See if we can use fewer problems to confirm if a student is proficient for a certain exercise or chapter.
  • Generate a knowledge graph of the exercises and problems that relate to the learning path of the students.

    • Find out interesting patterns in student's learning paths which can help to characterize different student-types.
    • Recommend a personalized learning path that a student can follow after finishing a certain chapter.
    • Recommend the next sequence of problems to increase the chance of the student becoming proficient or decrease the probability to give up.
    • Find out problems that can serve as capability assessment when a student joins Junyi Academy and problems that are not helpful for the students.
  • Predict when and why a student will drop out or give up and look into possible methods to mitigate them.

    • The student might completely stop using the online learning platform at all.
    • The student might give up leveling up a certain exercise to proficient.
    • The student might give up to answer the problem and just look through all the hints or guess all the possible answers.

Acknowledgements

This dataset belongs to Junyi Academy and is publicly available for anyone to use under the following terms provided by the policy. Everyone using this dataset should follow the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license.

About Junyi Academy Foundation

Junyi Academy Foundation is a nonprofit organization providing all children equitable quality education by technology and creating opportunities for all children to become lifelong learners by delivering scalable personalized education and cultivating their self-learning habits.

We believe that education is not only about learning knowledge, but also about learning how to learn, so as to strive for a better future for self and others along with the changes in time.

Established in 2012, Junyi Academy is an online learning platform that provides over 10 thousand videos and 50 thousand exercises of grades from elementary school to senior high school. There are various subjects including science, technology, math, language, etc. In order to fulfill educational equity, all courses are free for all children. Up to 2019/11, there are over 1.7 million registers and over 67 thousand weekly active users on Junyi Academy. Junyi Academy is now the biggest online learning platform in Taiwan.

In addition, Junyi Academy Foundation uses technology to help teachers and parents follow up on the learning progress of their children. By taking advantage of data analysis and artificial intelligence, we enable teachers to pay more attention to the children in need or to educate knowledge and core competencies not taught in textbooks. Until 2019/11, we have more than 5,600 members in Junyi Teacher Community.
